The story of Midas began in 1956 when Nate H. Sherman, a visionary entrepreneur with a passion for automobiles, recognized the growing need for specialized automotive repair services. At the time, car ownership was booming in the United States, and more people were hitting the roads than ever before. However, there were few places where drivers could get reliable, high-quality repairs for their vehicles, particularly when it came to mufflers and exhaust systems.
Sherman saw this as an opportunity. He wanted to create a business that not only provided expert automotive services but also offered drivers peace of mind with consistent, top-notch customer service. With this goal in mind, he founded Midas, named after the legendary king whose touch turned everything to gold—a symbol of the quality and reliability Sherman aimed to deliver.
The first Midas shop opened in Macon, Georgia, and it quickly gained a reputation for its “Muffler Installation Dealers’ Associated Service” (MIDAS) offerings, specializing in muffler repairs and replacements. What set Midas apart was its innovative approach to customer service, including the introduction of the first-ever nationwide guarantee on muffler replacements, which became a cornerstone of the brand’s commitment to quality.
As word spread about the reliability and excellence of Midas services, the business expanded rapidly. By the 1960s, Midas had established itself as a leader in the automotive repair industry, with locations across the United States and beyond. The franchise model allowed local entrepreneurs to own and operate Midas shops, further spreading the brand’s reach and maintaining its high standards.
Over the decades, Midas continued to evolve, expanding its services to include brakes, tires, oil changes, and general automotive maintenance, becoming a one-stop shop for drivers seeking trustworthy and expert car care.
